Day 19: from Grand Canyon to Monument Valley

There was a buffet for breakfast in my hotel; all the cold things were free (i.e. fruits, bread, jams, fruit juices, cereals…). It’s crazy to see how people behave in that case. They behave like animals, trying to grab as many things as they can… You have to be quick to grab a glass of orange juice. I wasn’t. The waiter brought a dozen of glasses, and by the time I reached this oasis, there weren’t any left.
I drove to Desert View, the last point in the Grand Canyon where you can have a nice view of the Canyon. There you can see the Colorado River.

Then I left the Park and continued to the West. There were some nice scenic view along the road, see the following canyon picture. It is a 1000 feet deep! So I had to be careful not to slip.

The road to Monument valley is very straight.
After 170 miles, you start to see the first Mesas. The landscape becomes fantastic when you approach the Arizona/Utah border: just see by yourselves! These geological structures are called Mesa or Butte, depending on their shape.

I’m staying inside Monument Valley, here’s the view I see from my room (you see the Mittens, left and right, and the monolith Merrick Butte). Many westerns starring John Wayne were shot in this area. Also, a scene from the movie Forrest Gump was shot here (at the end, when Forrest runs along the highway 163, with the Mittens in the background, remember???)
I took some nice shots at night, with the moon as only light source. This was great! Tomorrow I’ll do the 17 miles drive loop in the Valley (a.k.a. Valley Drive).
